"A panel tasked with finding solutions to Indiana's teacher pay problem will not have any teachers on it."
What is the governor thinking? No educators on the commission and only one K12 teacher in an advisory capacity? This just shows his lack of respect for educators in Indiana schools. The Indiana Legislature and the recent occupants of the Governor's office have brought this current conundrum onto themselves by turning a deaf ear to educators, creating tax policies and circuit breaker legislation that has made local school referendums to adequately fund our schools commonplace.
If other states are also working to increase teacher pay to make it a more attractive profession to pursue in their states, Indiana needs to invest more dollars to maintain it's current 31st place among states, let alone make significant progress in becoming competitive with other states in the quest to attract the best educators. If the Indiana legislators don't substantially invest in Indiana's education system by increasing funding for teacher salaries, Indiana will fall even farther behind the other states.
