Indiana's teachers are last in the country in salary growth since 2002! Is anyone truly surprised at this study's findings. We should all be disappointed and angry! This seems to be the "climate change" issue of Indiana. Too many of our legislators just don't believe there is a teacher salary problem! Their plan of inaction is to "pass the buck" in currently funded dollars, to local superintendents and let them deal with setting any teacher salary increases. State legislators refuse to address any steps toward fair compensation for teachers if it would even suggest a need for an increased portion of state revenue to be allocated toward increasing teacher salaries. One legislative proposal was to require a greater portion of the currently allocated money to be given to teacher salaries. In other words, have local superintendents make cuts to transportation, food service, and building maintenance to give teachers a pay increase; all unacceptable! That's a plan?! Since our current legislators won't act on addressing the lack of a fair and substantial teacher salary increase, we then, as voters, must act on the problem by putting new legislators into office! It doesn't take a genius to see that the Indiana Legislature is the cause of the current problem. Since the Daniels administration, the Indiana Legislature has robbed over $300 million dollars from the school budget through cuts, attacked our local community schools by promoting charter school legislation (increasing the number of Indiana's schools while dividing available education dollars), crippling collective bargaining, and the list goes on. The nation's lowest teacher salary increase is just a symptom. The disease is the group of inept state legislators that we allow to stay in office! Let's educate (it's what we do) our friends and neighbors and get out the vote! When our chance for change comes about, "Remember in November!"
